Locals can have their say on the 2026 Commonwealth Games — some of which will be held within an hour of Maryborough — over the next two weeks.

The Games are set to be hosted by Victoria and the State Government is asking local communities for their ideas on how to best showcase their region as part of the world-wide sporting event.

Regional hubs for the Games include Ballarat (boxing, cricket T20, athletics and para athletics) and Bendigo (cycling, lawn bowls and para lawn bowls, cricket T20, netball, squash, weightlifting and para powerlifting), as well as Geelong and Gippsland.

Minister for Commonwealth Games Delivery Jacinta Allan said will deliver major benefits to the regions.

“We’re working closely with a number of different community groups to ensure the 2026 Victoria Games showcase the very best regional Victoria has to offer,” she said.

“The Commonwealth Games will deliver major benefits to the regions, and it is fantastic to see local clubs and venues including Latrobe City Stadium becoming home to some of the world’s best athletes.’’

It is estimated the Games will contribute more than $3 billion to the state’s economy, creating more than 600 full time jobs before the Games, 3900 jobs during and a further 3000 jobs beyond the closing ceremony.
