Five local businesses are inviting jobseekers to take a sneak preview into their future as part of the Industry Open House commencing tomorrow.

Asteria, Central Goldfields Shire Council’s Operations Depot, Maryborough District Health Service, McPherson’s Printing Group and Sonac will all provide free site tours and presentations about the job opportunities available at their businesses.

Bendigo Kangan TAFE Skills and Jobs Centre as well as Asuria will be offering career advice workshops as part of the week’s proceedings.

Asteria planning and community liaison Claire De Natris said the open tour will be an insight into the variety of local jobs available.

“When people come to visit us, a lot of people don’t realise just how many services we provide and what we actually do,” she said.

“It is a great opportunity to showcase our group services, supported employment, car wash and our gardens.

“Being a support worker is a very diverse role, so it’s a great opportunity to actually see all the avenues in action.”

The 2021 Census reported Maryborough’s unemployment rate at over six percent, above the state percentage of five.

The Census also found professionals, defined as industry specific workers, made up over 12 percent of the local workforce, while Victoria is at 25 percent.

A local Business and Industry Staff Recruitment Retention Survey issued in December 2023 suggested a demand for a work experience taster program to help meet local demand for apprentices and industry specific workers.

The week has been organised by the Central Goldfields Shire Council, and according to economic development officer Brian Gould the program provides opportunities asked for by stakeholders.

“The Industry Open House week is planned based on feedback from employers, young people, and job seekers, that they need more opportunities to make face-to-face connections and get a better understanding of the careers and job opportunities available locally,” he said.

“It’s a chance to get a better picture of what’s available, to ask questions, and to get advice about what businesses are looking for in new employees.”

Mr Gould said initiatives like the open house, and the recent Maryborough Careers Expo, are important steps in supporting staff retainment and recruitment issues.

“The Industry Open House, and overarching Triggering Innovation Leadership Transformation (TILT) program, are small but important steps to help our local economy thrive, by supporting stronger connections between local industries and community,” he said.

“TILT is a program built on the belief that the people who know Central Goldfields best are our own community; and that the best way to tackle the challenges facing our region is to listen to, and invest in, community leadership.

“While there’s plenty of work to do, and we won’t solve problems like workforce shortages overnight, these programs are a start.”

The Industry Open House starts tomorrow with the Operations Depot tour at 9 am.

TheBendigo Kangan TAFE Skills and Jobs Centre service is also on tomorrow at the Maryborough Branch Library from 10 am to 4 pm.
