The annual Maryborough Junior Basketball Tournament will be returning this weekend, with a record number of teams coming far and wide to the town.

Five courts will be in use for the tournament, with the Maryborough Basketball Association securing the use of the Tullaroop Leisure Centre in Carisbrook, Maryborough Education Centre, both courts at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre and the newly-upgraded Nolan Street Gymnasium.

Almost 100 games will be played throughout the weekend, with 51 teams competing.

Maryborough will have strong representation across all age groups, with 12 teams competing, while Deniliquin and Terang will also have strong representation, sending eight and seven teams respectively.

Carisbrook Lions Club will be on hand to provide a barbecue, while a coffee van will also be present.

The Maryborough Basketball Association has also secured a sponsor, with the Community Bank Avoca, Maryborough and St Arnaud jumping on-board to provide support.

New banners will be installed showing their support throughout the weekend for the tournament.

Maryborough Basketball Association’s Leanne Dellavedova said she was grateful for the Community Bank hopping on board to provide the tournament with a major boost.

“Their sponsorship will promote the tournament even more, and continue to improve it,” she said.

“It gives an opportunity to our local basketballers to play in their home town, where they do go to quite a lot of other tournaments such as Portland, Warrnambool and Shepparton, and now it’s their turn to play at home.”

Dellavedova also said members of the Maryborough Blazers senior teams will be helping out, as well as volunteers, including family and community.

“Some of the Blazers men’s and women’s team will be helping out on Saturday at the Sports and Leisure Centre, which is wonderful for them to give back their time. They’ve been there and done that over the years,” she said.

The tournament will begin at 8 am on Saturday morning, and will run through the weekend, with finals to be played from 1.10 pm to 6 pm on Sunday. All games are free of charge.
