The Maryborough Senior Citizens club are brewing up their eighth annual Morning Tea for Cancer next Wednesday, with all proceeds going to the Maryborough District Health Service’s oncology unit.
Over $20,000 has been raised since the community event was founded in 2016, with guests treated to a morning filled with tea, coffee, food, auctions, raffles and sale tables.
Maryborough Senior Citizens Club president Veronika Miles said the event is an important gathering for an important cause.
“It is a great event where we have been able to give back to the community, all of the money we raise all goes to the oncology centre here in Maryborough,” she said
“We usually get around 80 to 100 people on the day and I just love seeing everybody get together — it is a pleasure to see everyone interacting and enjoying each others company.
“This is what the Maryborough Senior Citizens Club is all about, allowing older people the opportunity to have that social interaction.”
The event has been prompted by the Cancer Council Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, which raised nearly $15 million for the research, prevention, and support efforts of the charity in 2023.
While the citizens club is very supportive of the initiative, Veronika said the club wanted to make sure local efforts went back to supporting local people.
“May is cancer month, so usually everyone has their Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council, but when we started bringing up the idea for the event, everyone said that they would rather have the money stay here in the community,” she said.
“One year we went into the hospital and we saw everything they had been able to buy for people going through chemotherapy — they had a wig library, chairs, blankets, drip stands, all the things that make them as comfortable as possible.
“I really enjoy supporting the oncology unit and I get so much pleasure from being able to make people smile.
“This world can be really tough on everyone sometimes, so we need to have more pleasure and happiness.
“You don’t have to be a member or even a senior to come along, the event is open for all.”
The Morning Tea for Cancer is on next Wednesday, May 1 from 10 am at the Maryborough Senior Citizens Club at 52a Alma Street. Entry is $5.
