LAANECOORIE DUNOLLY 4/144 def COLTS PHELANS 9/143
Laanecoorie Dunolly proved that they’ll once again be a hard team to get on top of with both bat and ball, with a four-wicket haul from Alex Sutton and 40 runs from new recruit Samit Gohil guiding them to a six-wicket victory over Colts Phelans.
Colts batted first, and got off to a bit of a shaky start when Kane Shepherd nicked one through to James Shorney to be removed for a duck.
However, they then utilised a 76-run stand between Wayne Stubbings and Ed Foreman to get their innings on track. Foreman was able to push the pace, hitting two sixes, and was on 35 before Sutton found the edge to get him removed.
Rhys Egan was next up to the crease, but was only able to make eight runs before being run out by Gohil.
Laane got themselves in prime position in the game when Sutton was able to take three quick wickets, removing the key trio of Callum Watts (2), Matt Scott (1) and Stubbings, who made a superb 60. It meant that Laane had restricted Colts from making the runs they needed, having fallen to 6/115.
The wickets of Richard Clark, Liam Tatchell and Daniel McGregor rounded out the innings, with Colts making 9/143 off their 40 overs.
In response, Scott made the perfect start for Colts when he trapped Shorney in front for just three runs.
But, led by Gohil, in his first innings for Laane, and Tom Hannett, they got to work on building the necessary partnerships to get their second consecutive win, with the same method earning them victory over Clunes last week.
Gohil and Hannett were able to get the score up to 56 before Gohil (40) was removed off the bowling of Stubbings, who backed up his efforts with the bat with a good performance with ball in hand, taking a catch off his own bowling.
Zach Graham came out to bat, and immediately set about ensuring that Laane were still in the box seat by establishing a 40-run partnership with Hannett. However, that ended when he was run out for 19, leaving Laane 3/96.
Hannett was their last wicket, with quick thinking from Tatchell stumping him for 27 off the bowling of Stubbings.
Benjamin Gunn and Matt Smith guided Laane home, with Gunn unbeaten on 29 and Smith on 14 not out, running down Colts’ total of 143 with 55 balls to spare.
Graham was the star with the ball, turning the match on its head with his four dismissals, while conceding only 17 runs in the process. Brady Williams was another who bowled well for Laane, taking 2/33.
For Colts, Stubbings was their best player with the bat and ball, adding 2/32 alongside his top-scoring 60 in their batting innings.
Laane will now host Maryborough next week at True Blue Floors Oval, while Colts Phelans are set to have two weeks off before they take on Beaufort at Hedges Oval on November 27.
