Carisbrook Lady Redbacks fought extremely hard on Sunday against an athletic Lake Wendouree team, eventually going down by 36 points.

It took until the last quarter for the Lakers to really clear away, kicking two goals to well and truly put the game to bed, but it was a good effort from the Lady Redbacks, who have continued to gain pace on the better teams in the competition.

Lake Wendouree made a good start on Sunday, kicking the only two goals of the quarter to lead by 13 points at quarter time.

But the second quarter was a beauty, even if there were no goals scored. Both teams threw themselves at the ball to try gain some ascendancy on the scoreboard, and there were some terrific patches of ball movement. However, there was just one point scored by both teams, which meant the margin stayed at 13 points at the main break.

Lake Wendouree took charge in the third quarter and looked to put the game to bed, but inaccuracy was cruelling their goal, kicking just one goal from six scoring shots for the quarter. Still, it was good enough to see the Lakers lead by 24 points at the final change.

Two goals to finish off the day meant the Lakers were able to stretch the scoreline, even though Carisbrook were very good value for their efforts.

Julianne Baldock worked hard in the clinches, as did Olivia Butler. Tiani Jardine, Caitlin Butler, Maddison Smith and Tara Curtis were also named in the best.

Meantime, the under 16s had a terrific tussle with East Point, but could not hold out the Kangaroos in the second half, eventually going down by 10 points.

Carisbrook led at the first change by a goal, and in a good second quarter, both teams scored a goal, with the margin sitting at four points at the main break.

However, East Point were able to take charge in the third term, kicking the only goal, while holding Carisbrook scoreless, to sit three points in front at the final change, before kicking another goal to eventually take their first win of the season.

Rhani Evans, fresh off earning selection from the Ballarat Football League’s interleague squad, kicked both of Carisbrook’s goals, and she was named in the best alongside Emme Johnson, Eden Weaver, Georgina Bates, Remi Jardine and Amber Hogarth.

Both teams will now have the week off thanks to the King’s Birthday public holiday, with the senior team set to make the trip to Darley, while the under 16s will host North Ballarat in two weeks’ time.
