The Lap the Map challenge is set to return for 2022, following the success of last year’s event which saw the Maryborough Lions Club collaborate with Atrel Turner’s Supreme 1000 Lap Challenge.

The fundraiser will be held from October 17-29, with the goal to raise as much money as possible prior to World Diabetes Day on November 14, with the money going towards funding of diabetes treatment, research and prevention.

Lions Club president Lorraine Parker said after the success of last year, they are hoping for a great response from the community again in 2022.

“For our Lap the Map event, people can walk, swim, or do whatever they want to get laps done. Last year, we had cycling events, which helped raise $2600. The Lions Club donates a dollar for every lap the cyclists ride. It was a fantastic effort from the cyclists — it far exceeded our expectations,” she said.

“It’s very dear to my heart — we encourage people to join in. We’re hoping for good weather and a lot of participants.

“The cyclists can participate at their own leisure, there’s no set time or days to do it.”

Turner also encouraged members of the community to participate, saying that it is not just open to members of the Supreme 1000 Lap Challenge.

“It’s not just open to the Supreme Challenge riders, as it’s a fundraiser, we want as many people as we can get, and get as much money for the Lions Club as we can,” he said.

“Last year we had 26 riders. It would be good to get the same again this year.

“Last year, we had four riders from outside the group, but it’d be great if we could get more. The riders last year really embraced it. We had one rider do 212 laps during the challenge.

“I’ve sent out an email to all our riders, so that they’re aware of the date, but I will send through another one to keep them aware of what is going on. Last year, we got donations from outside our riders as well. If anybody wants to donate to the cause, they can do that by contacting Lorraine or myself.”

Parker adds that there are also alternative ways to add to the cause, even if it’s not possible to ride as many laps as possible.

“You can also drop in to the Lions bookshop at 142 High Street — we have a donation jar there for diabetes and they’d be very welcome to come in and have a chat to us,” she said.

Anyone who wishes to participate in the challenge can contact Atrel Turner at atrel.turner6@bigpond.com, while for more information about donations, you can contact Lorraine Parker at 0456 040 823.
