The Saturday pennant made its return, with the expected contenders firing their first shot.

In division one, reigning premiers Highland Tartan got their season off to the perfect start with a win which saw them double Avoca Red’s score, winning 80-40.

Greg Shay showed that his team will still be the ones to beat throughout the season, taking a straightforward 26-14 win over Daniel Giddings, while Michael Fryar also got his season off to the best start thanks to a 28-13 win over Chris Cocking. Garry Coburn finished off the job with a 26-13 win over Graeme Orr.

Dunolly Blue took their first important step as Tartan’s likely challengers, defeating Talbot Gold in a spirited match 66-55.

Talbot Gold took honours with Peter McLaughlin taking a 23-22 win over Peter Waters, but it was all Dunolly on the other two rinks, with Greg Dobbin defeating Paul Radstock 20-15, and Tony Galofaro defeating Peter Fletcher 24-17.

Highland White’s first game in division one could not have gone any better, taking a 72-40 victory over Newstead Blue.

The win was set up thanks to Leanne Wallis’ dominant 31-8 win over Brian Daly, and while Bill Burnett was able to salvage two competition points thanks to a 22-15 win over Nathan Reeves, nothing was going to stop Highland White as Robert Bursill finished off the job with a 26-10 win over David Cobden.

Maryborough Golf Blue were also winners, taking a comfortable 77-55 win over Dunolly Gold.

In a high-scoring first rink, Roy Pickering took a thriller over Gerry Carmody, winning 27-24, but the remaining two rinks were Golf’s, with Anthony Chambers defeating Bernie Lanfranchi 31-15, and Kevin Prime defeating Peter Freemantle 22-13.

In division two, runner-up Carisbrook got their season off on the right foot, defeating Dunolly Green 70-46.

Phillip Burt defeated Wayne McLeish 23-12 to set Brook up, but Dunolly Green fought back on the second rink, with Aaron Britten defeating Ron Baker 25-15. The third rink was Carisbrook at their devastating best, with Eric Symons taking a comfortable 32-9 win over Sandra Chaplin.

After going down to division two, Highland Red bounced back with a first-up win over Maldon, but it took their best to eventually overcome their spirited opponent.

Annette Gillham gave Maldon two points on the first rink after defeating Tilleke Wadeson 23-13, but Highland Red hit back when Lance Wadeson defeated Peter Sedgwick 18-17. It was Albert Spencer’s 25-12 win over Jim Brookshaw which allowed Highland Red to take the points.

Talbot Brown got their season off on the right track by defeating Maryborough Golf Gold 58-43.

Golf Gold got two premiership points through John Scott, who defeated Steven Murray 22-15, but Talbot Brown steadily hit back, with Ray Prentice defeating Ross Andrews 17-13, before Barb Crossley’s 26-8 win over Syd Webb helped get them 14 points.

In the round’s most thrilling game, Avoca Gold held off Newstead White to win by just one shot, 59-58.

Matthew Higgins defeated Mark Leckey, 22-17, and Avoca Gold looked home after winning the second rink through Loralee Field, who defeated Adam Sewell 25-16. But Newstead White almost pinched the game on the final rink, with Graeme Lipback defeating Rebecca Zeuschner 25-12.

In round two, the pick of the games in division one sees impressive round one winners Dunolly Blue and Highland White meet at Dunolly.

Talbot Gold will look to bounce back as they host Maryborough Golf Blue, while Highland Tartan will look to continue their fast start when they travel to play Dunolly Gold.

Both Avoca Red and Newstead Blue will look to bounce back when they meet at Avoca.

In division two, Talbot Brown will look to keep up their good start when they travel to Highland Red, as will Carisbrook, as they make the short trip to Maryborough Golf Gold.

Newstead White will look to get their season started with a win against Dunolly Green, while Avoca Gold will meet Maldon.
