Maryborough Golf Club will be the place to be next Tuesday as both semi finals will be played following a dramatic final round of action.
The titanic battle for the minor premiership between runaway leaders Dunolly Blue and Highland Tartan eventually went the way of the former, with both teams recording strong victories.
Dunolly Blue’s win over Maryborough Golf consigned Golf to the wooden spoon, as Blue took the game 71-48.
Margaret Davies defeated Kort Gay 23-17, while Alan Weir had the best win of the day, defeating Marian Webb 22-10. Tony Galofaro finished things off with a 26-21 win over Elizabeth Bucknall.
Highland Tartan will be nipping at Dunolly Blue’s heels all the way following their 90-44 win over Highland Gold.
Jan Turner defeated Adrian Masterman-Smith 31-11, while Greg Shay had a similarly dominant 34-15 win over Albert Spencer. Leanne Wallis finished things off with a 25-18 win over Lowen Clarke.
Talbot are quietly chugging along in third and will be confident they can do some damage in finals, warming up with a 68-46 win over Dunolly Gold.
Talbot took the first two rinks, with Barb Crossley defeating Jill Morse 25-8 and Robert Jackson beating Jim Haigh 25-16. Dunolly Gold did not go without, with Barry Mortlock defeating Paul Radstock 22-18 to take two competition points.
The drama was at Avoca, where Carisbrook desperately tried to pinch the final spot in the top four from Avoca’s grasp, but it was not to be, falling just two rinks short.
In reality, Avoca only needed to win one rink, with a 15-point advantage coming in, and duly delivered with Ann Loosmore’s 19-16 win over Eric Symons on the first rink. Daniel Giddings added another rink with a 19-15 win over Gary Haigh, but Patricia Stancombe’s 25-12 win over Christine Bearpark gave Carisbrook the overall win.
It means that Highland Tartan and Dunolly Blue will now meet for the right to make the grand final, with the two teams splitting their two encounters this season.
Highland Tartan got their season off to the perfect start back in round one, taking a 62-54 victory.
Wallis defeated Davies 19-17, while Dunolly Blue hit back on rink two, with Galofaro defeating Turner 21-13. But it was Shay’s performance in beating Freemantle 30-16 which allowed Highland Tartan to take the win.
In round nine, Dunolly Blue reversed that result, taking a 58-49 victory.
This time, Freemantle was victorious, defeating Turner 20-14, while Galofaro defeated Wallis 27-11. Shay gave Highland Tartan a fighting chance by feating Davies 24-11.
In the sudden-death semi-final, Talbot and Avoca will meet.
The Yabbies have taken two victories over Avoca this season, with a 57-52 win in round five followed by a 72-57 win in round 12.
