How have newspapers changed over the years?
How do the different aspects of the newspaper (advertising, production, editorial, and admin) come together to make the final product? What components in the creation of the newspaper don’t the pubic see?
These are just some of the questions I had when beginning my work experience at The Maryborough District Advertiser on Monday last week, and following four days of learning, meeting new people and work, I am confident in saying I’ve gotten some answers.
The advertising section of the newspaper is really eye-opening, from client communication, the steps of creating an advert to the final product, there is so much work that goes into making an ad that can catch readers’ attention as well as promote the product.
With the amount of time it took me to choose a background, product photos and the text for one advert, it’s a credit to the advertising crew who are constantly doing this for so many different clients.
The highlight of my week was definitely doing a movie review on Ghostbusters: Afterlife, for which I got to watch a great movie for free and spend time researching and writing a piece for the paper.
The social components of the newspaper were another highlight, and the importance of these connections were evident through the interactions and interviews undertaken to get information for a new piece in the paper, whether that be an advert, a story or a photograph.
I was lucky enough to learn some tips and tricks in relation to photography, and have come to realise its importance when surrounded by words, and the story even one photo can tell.
I have to mention the piles of past newspapers bound into books. It was entertaining, flipping through these books and finding photos or classifieds of people I know.
The past week has made me value the newspaper itself so much more, as well as introducing me to the world of journalism, a field I’m definitely interested in investigating some more.
