Lexton back up to fourth after dominant win over Giants
LEXTON 16.19 (115) def MARYBOROUGH GIANTS 6.4 (40)
Lexton took pole position for a spot in the top four thanks to a dominant second half, which yielded a 75-point victory over the Maryborough Giants at Lexton Recreation Reserve.
The result was a blow to the Giants’ hopes of securing a berth in the finals, as they now must defeat Newstead and Talbot in con-secutive weeks, and hope results go their way to secure a berth.
Regardless, it was always Lexton’s day as they led for much of the afternoon. Three goals to two in the first term meant that the Tigers were able to take a nine-point lead into the first change.
The Tigers continued to extend their lead in the second term, but the Giants were hanging in there gamely, generating good looks at goal, but could only manage one goal from four scoring shots. Lexton managed four goals to lead by 27 points at the main break.
It was all the Tigers in the third term as they put the foot down, and could have led by more than 46 points had they kicked straight, having kicked five goals from 12 scoring shots, while the Giants kicked three goals straight.
Lexton continued their dominance in the last term, and crucially, were able to boost their percentage in their battle with Dunolly for fourth spot, having kicked the only four goals in the final term.
Tom McGregor provided plenty of drive from the backline for Lexton, while Lochlan Pett was also terrific. Ben Noonan reaped the rewards by kicking seven goals for the Tigers, while Jordan Phelan, Tyler Trickey and Jack Peacock were also named in the best.
Zayne Earl continued a recent run of good form for the Giants, while Cody Wright continued to look dangerous as he has for much of the season. Peter Wytkamp, Riley Govan and Kaylab Eggers were also named in the best for the Giants.
