Locals came together last week for the Lexton Community Club’s first fundraiser in three years, aimed at supporting an important initiative.

Held on Thursday, September 14, the group organised a luncheon in the town’s community centre to raise money for the Pyrenees Food Pantry’s Avoca branch.

With around 50 people in attendance, the Lexton Community Club raised more than $1500, almost triple the amount members were hoping to collect on the day.

“This was our major fundraiser for the year and I thought anything over $500 would be fantastic,” club president Helen Jolley said.

“It’s the first time we’re doing this for the Avoca pantry and they were thrilled when we gave them the cheque.

“I’m feeling good with the outcome. It was excellent, we’ve done a lot better than we expected. There were a lot of people and it was a very fulfilling thing to do.”

The fundraiser, Ms Jolley said, was very well supported and urged people to get behind similar initiatives in the future.

“All the food for the lunch was donated by members of our group as well as by the local community and we’ve also had sponsors supporting our major prize draw so everything pretty much has been give to us by businesses with some as far as Ballarat and Maryborough,” she said.

“I’m very grateful to everyone who has supported us and these are difficult economic times for people so something like the food pantry is a really important service for those who might be in need.

“I think people should look out for opportunities, if there is someone you can help in the community then you should.”

The Pyrenees Community Food Pantry, located at 13 Liebig Street in Avoca, is open fortnightly on Fridays from 1 to 3 pm — more information can be found on their Facebook page, under the same name.
