LEXTON (51) def MALDON (47)
Lexton got their season off to a solid start, but were made to fight all the way by a much-improved Maldon outfit in winning by four goals.
The Tigers got off to the better start on Saturday, scoring 12 goals to nine in the opening term, with the tried and true combination of Rachel Phelan and new coach Leesa Donhardt scoring six goals each, while Theresa Buchanan scored six goals for the Dons.
But Maldon, with new co-coach Katie Tong shifting to goal shooter, would benefit by scoring 12 goals to eight to hit the front by half time, with Tong scoring eight goals of her own. Meantime, at the other end, Phelan would score six goals, and Donhardt too, with Lexton suddenly in a dog fight.
Lexton displayed all the qualities which has seen them become regular premiership contenders in the third quarter, scoring 17 goals to 11 to regain control of the game, and lead 37-32 at the final change. Phelan scored nine goals, and Donhardt eight, while Tong scored five goals at the other end.
Maldon tried to get back into the game in what was an entertaining final quarter, but every time the Dons questioned Lexton, the Tigers had the answer as they held on to their lead. Phelan and Donhardt scored eight and six goals respectively, while Maldon, led by Tong with eight more goals, won the quarter by a goal to reduce the margin slightly to four goals.
It means both teams face interesting encounters next week, with the Dons looking to avoid an 0-2 start by hosting Carisbrook, while Lexton will look to make it two straight to open the season when they travel to Natte Bealiba.
