LEXTON 9.14 (68) def DUNOLLY 7.3 (45)
Lexton defeated Dunolly by 23 points to secure their finals spot in very wet and slippery conditions on Saturday at Lexton Recreation Reserve.
The loss was costly for the Eagles, who now need to defeat Avoca on their home deck next week and rely on other results to go their way to secure a long-awaited finals berth.
The opening quarter on Saturday was played in good conditions and was basically a goal-for-goal quarter with eight goals scored. It was Dunolly that led at quarter time by 11 points.
The heavens opened up at the start of the second term, and it was Lexton that took advantage of the changeable conditions to slot two goals for the term through Mitch Crosier and Tom Cullinan and the Tigers held Dunolly scoreless as they would lead at half time by six points.
Lexton’s Adrian Verhoeven was the dominant ruckman in the second half and was giving the Tigers plenty of opportunities, as the home team continued to push the ball forward at every stoppage. They played wet weather football better than the Eagles.
There was only eight points in it when Joel Fisher kicked the opening goal for the Eagles in the final quarter, but the Tigers were able to finish the stronger when Jimmy Templeton and Josh Sargent kicked the next two goals to seal the game in front of the big reunion crowd.
Jacob Eyers was outstanding at ground level for the Tigers as was Bryce Karslake, while Verhoeven and Jordan Phelan were also significant in the victory as were Josh Sargent and Mitch Crosier.
Bailey Goodwin gave his all for the Eagles as did Connor Sheppard and Lachlan Tranter, while Mitch Goodwin and Laughlin Orr also were valiant in defeat.
