It was a dramatic day at the newly-refurbished Lexton Reserve as reigning premiers Harcourt held-off a fast-finishing Tigers outfit to take a four-point victory.
A noticeably younger Lexton outfit took to the field looking to take it right up to the Lions, and were able to do so by kicking four goals to three in the opening quarter to take a five-point lead.
But Harcourt started to take initiative during the second quarter, and enjoyed the better of the play. They would go on to kick three goals to two to snatch the lead away at half time by three points.
In the third quarter, the Lions made their move, kicking four goals to Lexton’s one, which saw them take a 22-point lead into the final break.
With the rain becoming heavier, Lexton threw caution to the wind, and were able to whittle down the gap to Harcourt, but ultimately fell just four points short of an almighty upset to kickstart the season.
For the Lions, Kyle Hamilton was named their best, while Cameron Anderson kickstarted his season with a good performance, kicking three goals. Jordan Gartside, Darby Semmens, Jed Rodda and Joshua Hogg were also good performers.
Lexton were well-served by Bryce Karslake, while Alex McLean, Jaykeb Lench, Joshua Sargent, Thomas Cullinan and Dan Wrigley, while Tyler Trickey marked his first game for the club with three goals.
