Maryborough Little Athletics Centre had an extremely successful campaign in the State Track and Field Championships last weekend, earning four medals and also taking home a flurry of personal bests.

Mia Schodde was the best performer, taking home a silver medal in the under 12 girls high jump, clearing 1.45 metres.

Kody Wright, Cassidy Miller and Darcy Thatcher earned a bronze medal, with Wright taking home bronze on Saturday in the under 16 boys shot put, throwing 11.29, while Miller cleared 1.41 m to finish on the podium in the under 17 girls high jump. Thatcher took home Maryborough’s only bronze medal on the track, finishing third in the under 15 girls 400 m in a time of 60.92.

Tamara Elliot, Naomi Henderson, Piper Marshal and Charlie Sullivan also competed over the weekend, with Sullivan finishing fourth in the 100 m for the under 13 boys, while Marshal finished fifth in the under 14 girls 1500 m. Henderson also took home a top 10 finish, finishing sixth in the 90 m hurdles.

Sullivan’s result also followed an exciting personal development, where he earned selection to the senior national athletics championships thanks to a win in the under 14 boys 100 m race, taking the win in a personal best time of 12.87 seconds.

Maryborough Little Athletics secretary David Tull said that this was the best haul Maryborough has had in the championships in a long time.

“I thought they did a great job. It’s the best performance we’ve had in a long time. I think we’ve had one medal in the past 10 years, and to get four this year was just perfect,” he said.

“It’s been a great period in Little Athletics. They are a group of kids that try their hardest every week, and do the best that they can.”

Tull put into perspective the impact of the rains that hit Victoria, which delayed the start of their season, as well as hot weather which has also cut into competition time.

“It’s been a good year when you consider that we had a delayed start to the competition over the first three or four weeks due to the wet weather,” he said.

Maryborough Little Aths will host their final competition tonight, before moving on to their competition day next Saturday.
