Works on the new Maryborough Skate and Scooter Park were completed ahead of schedule last year, with an official launch set to properly kick things off this weekend.

A cause for celebration, Maryborough’s latest addition, the skate park, will mark its official opening this weekend with a variety of activities planned for the day.

Set to be held on Sunday, February 26, at the Maryborough Skate and Scooter Park located at the Adventure Playground, Lake Road — the upcoming free-to-attend event will celebrate the space’s official launch since it first opened to the public in December last year.

The official opening, to be officiated by Central Goldfields Shire mayor Grace La Vella, with special guest Member for Ripon Martha Haylett, will commence at 11 am with activities to be held between 10 am and 4 pm.

Mayor La Vella said that the council is encouraging the community to come along and celebrate the occasion.

“Since the soft opening in December, it’s been wonderful to see so many people use the new facility — no matter what time of day I drive or ride past, there is always someone either skating, scooting or roller skating,” she said.

“If you haven’t used it yet we encourage you to come along and have a try at one of the skate clinics on offer — if you don’t have any gear that’s ok too as equipment will be provided on the day.”

The event will also recognise the contributions of those responsible for making the park a reality — including petitioning and funding efforts for the project.

“The official opening is an important occasion for us to be able to publicly thank our funding partners — the Victorian Government and Community Bank Avoca, Maryborough and St Arnaud, as well as Grind Projects who delivered the project in extraordinary weather conditions,” mayor La Vella said.

“It’s also an opportunity to thank the 1000 young people who instigated the project by signing a petition back in 2018 and presenting it to council.

“This competition standard facility will not only have a broad range of health and wellbeing outcomes for our local community, but it will also be utilised by residents of all ages and abilities in our neighbouring townships.”

All community members are encouraged to attend with skate clinics, competitions, demonstrations, pop-ups and a barbecue planned for the day.

Additionally on the cards — hosted by YMCA and funded through the Victorian Government’s Freeza program, All Aboard will host three skateboarding sessions from 10 to 11 am, 11.30 am to 12.30 pm and 1 to 3 pm.

The sessions are free with equipment provided.
