Calling on young adults to ditch their shoes for an evening of socialising, a not-for-profit is hosting a Barefoot Bowls event in Maryborough to promote an onlineplatform aimed at regional Victorian youth.

Developed by Youthrive, an organisation supporting rural and regional young people across the state, the Rural Youth Network (RYN) is a free online tool which aims to connect those aged between 16-30 with other individuals, interest groups, events, and opportunities — both locally and online.

To highlight the benefits of signing up to the platform, representatives from RYN will come down to the Maryborough Highland Society next week on February 9 to host a free adult-only Barefoot Bowls event from 5 pm onwards — with live music, free food, games, and prizes to be won.

“The RYN would be an incredibly useful resource for young people in the Central Goldfields region. It offers free, centralised access to a catalogue of relevant local and online events and opportunities, including employment, study options and paid experiences,” Youthrive Victoria Rural Youth Network engagement leader Courtney Casey said.

“Post COVID, we know there has been a decrease in youth engagement across many sectors and we hope to change that.

“The Barefoot Bowls event is completely free, with the aim of bringing local young people together to meet others and have fun, try something new and learn about the opportunities offered by the RYN. We also have giant Jenga to play, and amazing prizes generously donated by some wonderful local businesses.”

Ms Casey said that while RYN has numerous members, only a handful come from this region — prompting the decision to hold a promotional event.

“The RYN has 245-plus memberships, from across Victoria. Currently, only five people from the Central Goldfields region are engaged — which is why we are so excited to share it here,” she said.

Attendees must be aged 18 or more to participate in the event. To find out more, contact the Highland Society on 5461-1480. More information on the Rural Youth Network is available online at ryn.org.au
