The Carisbrook Lions Club once again held the district level Youth of the Year awards on Saturday, with the event hailed a success.
The Youth of the Year awards are held annually and see senior students from across the country judged at district, state and finally at a national level.
The program aims to encourage students aged 15-18 to take an active, constructive leadership role in their community and as part of the judging process, sees participants answer a set of questions in a formal interview, followed by a public speaking event.
Held at the Maryborough Senior Citizen’s Club, Saturday’s event marks the latest in a series of Youth of the Year events held by the Carisbrook Lions Club and president Jefferson Hoober said it was a positive way for the club to give back.
“Youth of the Year is something we’re always happy to host, as a club we see how important it is to encourage and support young people,” he said.
“We’ve held it for our district for quite a few years now and every year the youth that are involved are impressive.”
Youth of the Year seeks a high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement and winners are chosen by a panel of local judges.
Mr Hoober said students who have participated locally in the past have gone on to the state and national awards, including last year’s district winner who went on to take out the national public speaking award.
“It goes to show how worthwhile the initiative is, to have young people go on and win at a national level is a massive achievement and we’re more than happy to support that,” he said.
