The Ararat-Maryborough rail line will close for upgrades this week as works continue as part of the Murray Basin Rail Project.

The freight line will be closed to trains from tomorrow, Wednesday, November 2 until Thursday, December 15 to allow for track upgrades on the line.

The upgrades will support heavier loads for all trains using the line, with works including adding ballast, trackside vegetation removal and cutting back of embankments to improve sightlines, drainage upgrades and the installation of modern signalling at the Ararat junction.

Despite the absence of trains on the line, the rail corridor will remain a hazardous construction site with heavy machinery using the line and heavy vehicles using the Pyrenees Highway and adjacent sites.

Works are expected to be low impact, with crews monitoring noise levels and avoiding out of hours work where possible, while also limiting dust.

The Murray Basin Rail Project will enable 49 weekly freight train paths on the Murray Basin network up from the current 28 paths, meaning more freight will be able to be transported by rail.

Delivered by Rail Projects Victoria, the Murray Basin Rail Project will support 1000 direct and indirect jobs during delivery.
