Doncaster’s Maki Loukeris was able to take out the 200 m open final after a strong run.
Loukeris was able to blitz the field around the straight, scoring the win by almost four tenths of a second with a time of 20.676, with Tom Griffin in second with a 21.038, while Dashiell Muir finished third with a 21.281.
Loukeris went in with a clear plan throughout the day to combat the hot weather, and it paid off in spades by the end of the afternoon.
“The plan from the start of the day, knowing it was going to be very hot, was to hydrate from the first thing I would do. I was very happy with my heat run, and I’m happier that I was able to back it up in the final,” he said.
“It feels very nice, but I couldn’t have done it without the support I have. They help me, push me through training, and it’s shown in the race.”
Loukeris took a different approach to his normal schedule as a 70 and 120 m runner, instead entering the 200 and 400 m events. However, he now believes that will help him with a different training program.
“The 200 is a lot longer than what I’m used to, competing in the 70 and the 120, but I think now I’ll have a bit of a different training program, and just follow what the coach says,” he said.
Loukeris will seemingly maintain a sprint-based focus when he returns to Doncaster for more training, however.
“We train in Doncaster, but it’s all about consistency and a sprint-based focus, and I’m glad that it is the case, when you can show improvements and get wins on race day,” he said.
