Maryborough’s losing run has finally ended, giving the club some relief after a tough two months.
The Magpies did have to work hard for their win on Saturday, but a strong third quarter was the catalyst for their third win of the season.
Maryborough got off to a strong start, even despite a shooting slump which saw the Magpies miss nine goals for the term. Nevertheless, it was still a six-goal lead at the first break, having scored 14 goals. Keely Hare scored nine goals and Abbey Nalder scored five.
The Magpies midcourt continued to generate some strong opportunities in the second quarter, but inaccuracy was continuing to plague them, missing 14 goals.
Instead, it was Square that took honours for the quarter, closing the gap to two goals thanks to a 13-goal to nine run. Hare continued her scoring run, finishing with seven goals for the quarter, while Nalder scored two.
Maryborough finally shook off Square with a strong third quarter, their best of the afternoon, as the midcourt suffocated the Square ball movement. Hare was a beneficiary, scoring 10 goals for the term, while Nalder added three, as the Magpies took a nine-goal lead into the last change.
There may have been some nerves in the last quarter, but the Magpies held firm to run out the game well, with both teams scoring 13 goals apiece as the Magpies finally enjoyed the sensation of winning again.
Hare finished off the game with nine goals for a tally of 36 for the day, while Nalder’s four allowed her to score 13 for the day.
It was the midcourt work of Tali Chadwick, Emily Swan and Amanda Durbridge which was crucial to the Magpies’ win, giving them ample access to the goal circle throughout the afternoon.
The A grade success would be Maryboorugh’s only win on the day.
B grade came desperately close to securing their first win of the season, but Golden Square moved clear after half time to win by six goals, while B reserve were unable to make an impact, losing by 34 goals.
Maryborough’s 17 and under team will likely have to fight their way through from the elimination final after losing to Square by 16 goals. The result means that the Magpies now fall a game and a half behind the Bulldogs with four games to play.
