Maryborough were no match for reigning Bendigo Football Netball League premiers Gisborne, as the Bulldogs rediscovered their bite to win by 204 points.

It was a tough day all-round for the Magpies, as they were unable to garner a win in any of the three senior grades, despite a last-ditch bid from the under 18s falling just two goals short.

In the senior game, Gisborne got off to a good start when they were able to kick seven goals to two behinds in the opening quarter to take a 44-point lead.

Gisborne started off the second quarter the better, kicking the opening goal, but Maryborough’s best play of the day saw Jai Howell help set up Tom Myers, who was able to kick a goal to get the Magpies on the board.

However, that would be as good as it got for the afternoon, with the Bulldogs kicking the next six goals of the game to open up an 86-point lead at the main break.

A further six goals to the Bulldogs in the third quarter, while the Magpies kicked five behinds, saw the margin increase beyond 100 points, with the Bulldogs 123 clear at the final change.

But it was the last quarter which saw the Bulldogs pile on the goals, kicking 12.9 in the last to see them clear the 200-point barrier, eventually winning by 204.

It was undoubtedly a tough trip down the Calder Freeway for the Magpies, but they will be looking to rebound next week when they play Castlemaine at Camp Reserve in a game which pits ninth and 10th in the competition against one another.

Joel Swatton was Maryborough’s best, while Chris Freeman, Myers, Kya Lanfranchi, Ty Stewart and Cobie Read battled hard all day.
