Magpies’ under 14s get back-to-back flags

It was a day to remember for Maryborough’s under 14s on Sunday when they claimed back-to-back premierships, this time against Marong.

The Magpies rode a 13-game winning streak coming into the game at Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane Recreation Reserve, but they were made to work for their 24-point victory, with the Panthers asking constant questions throughout the day.

Luckily, however, the Magpies were able to utilise the run and carry of Jayden Humphrey, who thrilled the crowd with multiple gut-busting runs through the midfield, and earning a well-deserved best on ground trophy.

Marong kicked with a breeze in the first term and immediately goaled in the first 30 seconds of the game, but luckily, Maryborough were prepared to do the dirty work and knuckle down, and delivered a response almost immediately.

It was one of three goals in the first term for the Magpies, as they punished Marong’s inaccuracy in front of goal to lead 3.0 (18) to 1.4 (10) at the first change.

The Magpies now had use of the wind, and they used it wisely to kick two goals for the second quarter to increase their lead, extending their advantage to 19 points by the main break, leading 5.0 (30) to 1.5 (11).

How Maryborough utilised the third quarter would go a long way to deciding the contest, and pleasingly, they were able to control the contest and the territory, kicking a goal apiece for the term as they increased their lead to 21 points by the final change, leading 6.3 (39) to 2.6 (18).

Marong kicked the first goal of the final quarter to reduce the lead to 14 points and create some nerve in the Magpie camp.

But it was always the Magpies day as they peppered the goals and, although it only yielded one goal from six scoring shots, it mattered little as the Magpies were premiers again, kicking 7.8 (50) to 3.8 (26).

The win was a triumph for premiership coaches Matt Bartlett and Ethan Smith, as well as a well-balanced Magpie outfit whose teamwork stood out throughout the whole season.

Humphrey set the game alight, but the work of Hayden Bartlett and Jack Smith also set up multiple thrusts forward. Jai Andriske provided a terrific target around the ground, while Darcy Hoban and Ethan Wings were also named in the best after good performances.
