Maldon took an incredibly important victory in the context of their season to move back up to seventh, while closing the gap to Newstead by a game in their 14-goal victory at Bill Woodfull Oval.
The Dons needed a win to keep themselves in the top eight and their start was just the tonic, scoring 15 goals to eight to take an early seven-goal cushion. Katelyn Cutlack scored 10 goals, and Tayah Doyle added five for the Dons, while for Newstead, Bri Jury scored six goals and Tayla Gale two.
Newstead were able to close the gap slightly in the second term as they looked to get their game together, and scored 15 goals to 13 to make it a five-goal game, trailing 28-23 at the main break. Gale scored eight goals and Jury seven for the Roos, and Cutlack scored seven and Doyle six goals for Maldon.
It seemed Maldon had all the answers, however, and were able to increase their lead in the third quarter after scoring 12 goals to seven to lead 40-30 at the final change. Cutlack scored nine goals and Doyle three for Maldon, while for the Kangaroos, Gale scored six goals and Jury one.
The Dons finished off a strong afternoon by scoring 18 goals to 14 to finish with one of their better wins of the season. Cutlack finished off with 13 goals to make it 39 for the afternoon, while Doyle also had a good afternoon, scoring five goals to finish with 19. For the Kangaroos, Gale scored nine goals to finish with 24, while Jury added five to finish with 20.
The Dons will look to add to this win when they travel to Harcourt next week, while the Kangaroos will regroup with the bye.
