Maldon will go into next week’s elimination final with Talbot with an impressive 27-goal victory against Trentham at Bill Woodfull Reserve.
The Saints needed a victory and hoped that Campbells Creek would upset Newstead to get into the top eight, but it simply wasn’t to be, as irrespective of what happened in this game, the Saints would not make the finals thanks to the Kangaroos’ 19-goal victory.
Instead, it was Maldon who were determined to show that they were a finals threat, getting off to a strong start to lead 14 goals to five at the opening change. Much of the work went through Katelyn Cutlack at the Maldon goal third, scoring 12 goals, while Mackenzi Shepherd added two goals, and Jacqui Bell scored all five goals for Trentham.
Maldon continued to extend their lead in the second term, scoring 12 goals to eight to lead 26-13 at the main break. Shepherd and Cutlack scored six goals apiece for the Dons, while Bell and Zahlia Turton scored four goals for the Saints.
The Dons assumed complete control in the third quarter to completely extinguish the contest, scoring 17 goals to five to take a very comfortable 43-18 lead at the final change. Shepherd scored 11 goals and Cutlack six for Maldon, while Bell scored four goals and Turton one for the Saints.
Maldon did what they needed to in the last term, scoring 13 goals to 11 and getting through without injury to take a comfortable 27-goal win.
Cutlack scored nine goals to finish with 33 for the day, while Shepherd scored four goals to finish with 23 for the Dons, while Turton scored seven goals to finish with 12 goals, with Bell scoring four to lead with 17.
