Maryborough almost secures upset of the year
Maryborough put in a mighty performance, and almost caused the upset of the season when they travelled to St Georges to take on the Vikings last week.
The blue and whites frustrated the high-flying Vikings earlier in the season, and were a massive chance at half time when they scored the opening goal through Callum Connor.
But Maryborough weren’t quite able to hold on, and Vikings were able to get the game back on their terms, with Evan James scoring a brace to ensure that they would survive their big scare to maintain top spot on the ladder.
Despite Maryborough going down again, they can hold their heads up very high with their performances against Vikings this season, having lost 3-0 in the opening meeting between the two teams, before their great effort on Sunday.
With two rounds to go, Maryborough will focus on a game against Forest Rangers this week at Jubilee Oval.
It will be a difficult assignment against the second-placed Forest, who come into this game fresh off a 7-0 victory over Creswick, while also recording a 15-1 victory against Maryborough earlier in the season.
However, the blue-and-whites are expected to field a much stronger combination on the park this time around, and could spring a surprise on current form.
Like the senior men’s, the under 14s couldn’t quite get it done against Vikings, with scores deadlocked at half time at 1-1, after Joravar Dhanju was able to score, but a winner to Vikings meant that they took the points 2-1.
Maryborough will be hoping to get back on the winners’ list when they host Ballarat White in the curtain raiser in a clash between fifth and sixth place on the ladder.
Maryborough’s under nines will have some road trips this weekend, with Maryborough Gold travelling to Doug Lindsay to take on Creswick, and Maryborough Blue making their way to Pleasant Street to meet Ballarat White.
