A statement co-authored by the club and the Bendigo Football Netball League will be released today, outlining the expectation that the club will use 2025 to rebuild the club into a position where it can return to the league in 2026.

It will be the first time in 80 years Maryborough has entered a recess period — the last time coming in 1945 at the conclusion of the Second World War, before the club made its return to the playing ranks in 1946.

The recess period follows years of struggles for the club on the football field and netball court, with the football team losing its last 64 matches, while its reserves team could not finish off the season after playing the first two games due to a lack of playing numbers.

On the netball court, a move back from A grade to A reserve brought some success with a finals appearance in 2024, however, the club had won eight of its last 48 games in the top flight competition.

The club has posted notice of the Annual General Meeting, which will be held on Monday, November 11, with members and volunteers still expected to play a role at the club throughout the 2025 season, including the junior ranks, which will continue on in the Bendigo Junior Football League.

The statement on Maryborough entering recess will be posted in full in Tuesday’s edition.
