Maryborough Golf Club enjoys spectacular weekend of success for annual tournament
Magnificent conditions, strong fields and terrific play helped set up one of the Maryborough Golf Club’s best iterations of their annual tournament, with almost 260 entries compiled from over 170 golfers from over 30 different clubs across Victoria.
The three-day event allowed golfers to showcase their skills with different formats across the 108th annual tournament, with the course in terrific condition throughout.
The action started on Friday morning, with a four ball better ball round for both women and men in windy, but otherwise spectacular conditions.
As a result, there were some big scores at play in both grades, with Carmel Milenkovic and Debbie Stanaway taking out the women’s event with 51 points, winning from Stacy Smithwick and Aaliya Puvanendran on 46 points.
Such was the tightness of the competition, the teams of Jessica Hooder and Tayla Dignan, Lorraine Gollop and Jody Frost and Dee Harding and Joan Fraser all scored 46 points to be ball winners.
In the men’s competition, men’s captain Paul Flowers combined well with Brian Hart to take out the Friday event by scoring 53 points, with Rodney Blake and Denis Simpson runner-up on 47 points, and Bill Long and John Burford in third place on 46 points on a countback.

Nearest to the pins on nine in the women’s competition was Donna Bauer, with women’s captain Raeleen Brooker closest on 11. In the men’s competition, Nev Fitzpatrick was closest on nine, Michael Grocock was closest on 11 and Rob Daniell was closest on 13.
On Saturday, it was the men’s turn to take on the Andrew Maggs Memorial, with a 27-hole and 18-hole stroke event.
In A grade, a sudden-death play-off was needed between Craig Boucher and Josh Lacey after 27 holes, with both scoring 108, before Boucher eventually took the win.
Alan McIvor took the B grade victory with 114, with Daryl Groves runner-up on 126.
The future of the club was on show with the A grade 27-hole handicap section, with youngster Josh Nalder winning with 94 nett, winning from Mark Shortall, who was runner-up on 102.5 nett.
In the B grade handicap, Trevor Cromer scored 102 nett to just hold out Phil McKenna, who was runner-up on 103.5 nett.
The 18-hole handicap was similarly close in both A and B grade.
The A grade competition saw Paul Simmons score 67 nett to win the competition from Denis Davenport, who scored 68 nett as runner-up on countback.
B grade was similarly close, with Dave Kerry scoring 71 nett to win from Niki Pearse on 72 nett.
Nearest to the pins saw Jeremy Maggs closest on nine, Cromer closest on 11 and Keith Fankhauser closest on 13.
For golfers who played the 18-hole stroke round, Gary Reed took out the A grade win with 66 nett to win from Brett Chaplin, who was runner-up on 73 nett, while in B grade, Stephen Gowers was the winner in a close countback with Nigel Tarr, with both golfers scoring 67 nett.
A stableford round was also played between the women, with Janne Maggs taking the win on 39 points, and Lynda Pratt runner-up on 38 points. Jenny Welsby was nearest on the 13th.
The final day of the competition on Sunday saw the Gentsomes competitions, with some more terrific scoring.
Trent Monk, Shane Monk, Matt Walker and Cameron Radnell were the overall winners, taking victory with 156 points, winning from the team of Chris Thomas, Danevall Plover, Daniel Carter and Sebastian Distefano, who scored 153 points as runner-up.
The best mixed team saw Donna Bauer, Leanne Burt, Rod McClean and Yvette McClean score 137 points, while the best women’s team saw Janne, Welsby, Susan O’Connell and Lynda Pratt score 136 points.
The teams of Cromer, McKenna, Scott Menzies and Brad McDonald, as well as Wyllie, Simmons, Sean Harkin and Mark Marson, were ball winners.
Trent Monk was nearest to the pin on the ninth across the tournament, almost scoring a hole in one, while Jenny Welsby was also closest to the pin on nine. Kevin Clarke was closest on 11 and Pearse was closest on 13.
