Maryborough keeps their A reserve flag chances alive
Maryborough are still alive in the A reserve competition in season 2024 following an incredible elimination final triumph over Kangaroo Flat.
The Magpies now move into the first semi-final to be played next Sunday against Strathfieldsaye, but regardless of that, this was a result to savour.
It was a big weekend for the club, with the 17 and under team also playing in their qualifying final against Golden Square.
After a competitive run, the Magpies weren’t quite able to sustain the pressure from the Bulldogs, but they will live to fight another day after earning the double chance.
Still, it was arguably one of their better performances, notwith-standing each of the Magpies’ wins in 2024, given the dominance of the Bulldogs and Sandhurst on top of the ladder.
The 56-46 loss means that Maryborough will now progress to the first semi-final against Strathfieldsaye on Sunday morning.
Maryborough’s A reserve victory over Kangaroo Flat meant that the Magpies were able to enjoy a run of three games this season where they had the Kangaroos’ measure, taking two victories and a draw.
However, scoring a victory on the Queen Elizabeth Oval proved to be the sweetest one of all, with the Magpies’ 50-45 success ensuring they would live to fight another day.
Full quarter-by-quarter scores and goalscorers weren’t provided prior to production.
The Magpies will now look to turn around two previous losses to the second-placed Strathfieldsaye in the regular season when it matters most in the pressure-cooker environment of Queen Elizabeth Oval, where the Magpies well and truly looked at home on Sunday.
In round nine, the Magpies fell by just four goals to the Storm at home after a compelling run, while in the final round last week, the Magpies were outclassed by 18 goals.
Should the Magpies condemn the Storm to a straight-sets exit, the club will progress to a preliminary final to play against the loser of the second semi-final between Gisborne and Sandhurst.
