Maryborough has the chance to set themselves up for a tilt at the A reserve finals, starting with South Bendigo tomorrow.
A tricky first month of the season has seen the Magpies negotiate four of last season’s top five superbly, defeating Sandhurst and Castlemaine, while recording a draw against Kangaroo Flat.
But with eighth-placed South Bendigo followed by last-placed Golden Square at home, then seventh-placed Eaglehawk, the Magpies have a genuine chance to cement themselves as a contender for the double chance.
They certainly did not do their chances any harm with the way they performed against the Dragons, which was a real confidence-booster for the club.
It was the start which allowed the Magpies to dictate terms, having scored 11 goals to six, and won the first three quarters, including an eruption in the third quarter which saw them score 17 goals to basically have the game in their safe keeping.
Again, it was the Maryborough midcourt which allowed them leverage to take control throughout the afternoon, with Millie Cassidy and Tali Chadwick leading the charge, while Amanda Durbridge, as ever, kept the opposition at bay at wing defence.
The goal circle combination of Megan Kelly and Jordan MacIlwain continues to hum, with the duo combining for 49 goals against the Dragons — just the third time they had conceded that many goals since the start of the 2023 season.
Maryborough’s other grades will be hoping to follow their A reserve’s lead and record strong wins this weekend.
The B grade team will be hoping for a change of fortune after negotiating a tough start, and will have an opportunity to record their first win against the seventh-placed Bloods this week.
It’s a similar story for the B reserve team, who will have the chance to negotiate three lower-ranked teams, starting with the sixth-placed Bloods this week.
The 17 and under team are reeling from their first loss of the season against the Dragons two weeks ago, and will be hoping to maintain their spot in the top three this week when they play the fifth-placed Bloods.
A win will allow the Magpies to sit two games above the fifth-placed Bloods, as well as warming up for a clash against the undefeated Golden Square at home two weeks afterwards.
