Maryborough looks to go back-to-back in under 14s
Maryborough’s under 14 reserves two team will look to back up their premiership success from 2023 when they take on Marong on Sunday afternoon at Tannery Lane Recreation Reserve.
The Magpies will have good memories from the 2023 success, having delivered a dramatic premiership victory in last year’s decider against South Bendigo.
However, Maryborough looks more prepared this season to take the premiership home, having been the dominant team of the 2024 season.
The Magpies are currently riding a 13-game winning run, which dates back to grading games.
That has included two wins against the Panthers, this week’s opponent, with the Magpies taking a comfortable 58-point victory in round eight at Barker Oval Princes Park, before repeating the dose in an away game in round 13, with the Magpies coming away with a 13-point win in one of their toughest tests of the season at Malone Park.
They earned a grand final appearance by defeating Huntly in the second semi-final, winning by 22 points — although the damage could have been greater, having had 23 scoring shots to 11.
Ones to watch for the Magpies include Jack Smith, who finished second in the league best and fairest.
Smith has enjoyed a standout season, kicking 20 goals from his 13 games, and has been named in the best in nine of those games.
Ed Boyes is another to watch, having been the leading goalkicker across the board in 2024.
Boyes has kicked 40 goals in 13 games, and has likewise been named in the best players nine times.
Cruz Stevens has kicked 28 goals in 13 games to rank fifth in the league, having earned a mention in the best players six times, while Jayden Humphrey has also enjoyed a stellar season, scoring eight mentions in the best players.
The game against Marong will begin on Sunday at 2.20 pm.
