Dunolly’s Mia Schodde has performed strongly in her first of two national championships this month, finishing equal sixth in the under 14 women’s high jump at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships.
Schodde can lay her claim as Victoria’s best female high jumper for her age group, finishing the best of the three Victorians in the field at the South Australia Athletics Stadium in Adelaide, equalling her season’s best with a jump of 1.50 metres.
Schodde started her day on Thursday with a jump of 1.4 m, which she cleared comfortably alongside seven other contestants.
Moving to 1.45 m, Schodde, as well as seven others, cleared the jump with their first attempt to maintain her chances of scoring well in the competition.
Schodde’s third jump would prove to be her best of the morning, with the field moving to 1.5 m. She was one of six jumpers to clear the distance on their first attempt as she continued what was a terrific run.
However, it was the 1.54 m jump — her personal best jump which was achieved earlier in the year — which proved to be a touch too far for Schodde, who was unable to clear on any of her three attempts.
Still, it was a magnificent effort to finish in sixth position overall, with the competition eventually won by Queensland’s Mila Mabb with a jump of 1.65 m.
Schodde will take a big confidence boost out of her result ahead of her second national championships, which will see her return to Adelaide on April 27 and 28 for the Australian Little Athletics Championships, again competing in the high jump for Victoria.
