Midweek pennant returns on Tuesday, with some interesting matches on the horizon as the competition resumes.

With five rounds remaining in the season, it looks as though there are still six teams in the running for finals spots, with most intrigue centered around the battle for third, which sees Talbot on 114 points, with Avoca fourth on 103 points and Maryborough Golf in fifth, just one point in arrears.

Further complicating matters, Avoca will have the bye this week, which means they’ll be relying on ladder-leader Highland Tartan to get the job done against Maryborough Golf in order to maintain their spot in the top four.

Having enjoyed a 77-43 win last time the two teams met, Tartan should be favourite, but will be looking to take a clean sweep to at least maintain their 23-point gap to Dunolly Blue on top of the ladder.

Dunolly Blue, for their part, will be travelling to Newstead, and although they will be favoured to win, Newstead have also come in having won two of their last three games, so expect a bit of a tighter contest than the 81-33 result that went Dunolly Blue’s way in their last meeting.

Third-placed Talbot will travel to Carisbrook as they look to move away from the chasing pack. Having enjoyed a 79-41 win in their last meeting, the Yabbies will be expected to get the job done, while Carisbrook will be hoping for a better showing after losing by 112 shots in their last game before the holiday break.

Highland Gold will need to win to keep their finals hopes alive when they host Dunolly Gold. While Dunolly Gold have just one win for the season, they lie just five points behind Carisbrook, and a win for them could see them move off the bottom of the ladder as a result. They will need to improve on a 69-45 loss in their last meeting, however.
