The race for top spot has tightened up in midweek pennant as Dunolly Blue took full advantage of ladder-leader Highland Tartan’s bye as Charity Round came to a close at the Highland Society.
It’s a tantalising preview of Tuesday’s top-of-the-table clash, with just eight points separating both teams on the ladder.
Dunolly Blue were able to close the gap thanks to a 56-45 win over Maryborough Golf.
It was a largely close game, but Tony Galofaro’s 20-8 win over Harold Patullo was all the ammunition Dunolly Blue needed, after Alan Weir defeated Liz Bucknall 21-16. Golf did gain two points thanks to Kort Gay’s 21-15 win over Keith Elliott, but they weren’t quite able to lure the reigning premiers back in.
Talbot maintain third spot on the ladder courtesy of an 86-48 victory over Newstead.
In a high-scoring first rink, David Cobden was able to get the points for Newstead with a 25-22 win over Robert Jackson, but it was all Talbot on the remaining two rinks, with Ray Prentice taking a dominant 40-8 win over Stuart Cochrane, and Barb Crossley taking a 24-15 win over Brian Daly.
Avoca are in pole position to take the final spot in the top four thanks to their 66-51 win over Highland Gold.
While Paul Gothard gave Highland Gold two points and the advantage with a 25-7 win over Daniel Giddings, Avoca were able to claw back ground on the second rink, with Noel Parratt taking a 23-18 win over Lowen Clarke, before Loralee Field gave Avoca victory with a 36-8 win over Dennis Prosser.
Dunolly Gold climbed off the bottom of the ladder with a 56-50 win over Carisbrook.
Wayne Stephens gave Dunolly Gold an ideal start with a 19-15 win over Patricia Stancombe, but Carisbrook fought back thanks to Leonie Briggs’ 20-15 win over Fabio Delconte. But James Smith’s 22-15 win over Denise Matic gave Dunolly Gold the edge.
Top spot is on the line for round 16 of the midweek pennant when Highland Tartan and Dunolly Blue meet. While Dunolly Blue still have a bye to negotiate, they can take the mental advantage with a win, as well as top spot.
An important game between third-placed Talbot and fifth-placed Maryborough Golf could be key in deciding the outlook of the final four. With a significantly harder draw than fourth-placed Avoca, Golf must win to keep their finals chances alive, while Talbot will look to lock in a finals spot ahead of a tough fortnight against the top two teams to finish the home-and-away season off.
Avoca will look to keep their spot in the top four intact when they play Carisbrook, who themselves will be looking to move off the bottom of the ladder.
Newstead and Dunolly Gold meet at Newstead, with both teams looking to clear away from bottom-placed Carisbrook.
Highland Gold will have the bye.
