Musical joy for all
Symphonic carols and the sounds of a pipe organ will fill St Andrew’s Uniting Church this weekend for An Afternoon of Music set to be a treat for the ears.

The program is filled with talent-ed local artists ready to entertain visitors throughout Sunday after-noon.
Organist Gavin Cuff will begin the afternoon’s proceedings, playing the pipe organ originally built in 1910 for the Wesleyan Methodist Jubilee Church (now Phelan’s Jubilee Chapel) before being trans-ported to the Uniting Church in 1983.
The afternoon will continue with performances from the Maryboro-ugh Theatre Company choir, vocalists Paul Flowers, Chris and Geoff Hadwen, Sally Turton and Geoff and Meryl James to name a few. Local pianist David Steed will also accompany many of the performers.
The church’s Glenda Rowland said the annual event is a wonderful opportunity for residents to come together and experience the first senses of Christmas.
“For many years we have had a musical afternoon and it has always been a celebration of local musicians and a pleasure to hear them show-case their skills,” she said.
“Ever since COVID, we have held the event at the beginning of Advent which allowed people to start enjoying Christmas time.
“It’s just a lovely afternoon for people to enjoy themselves and we look forward to seeing everyone attend and have a great time.”
The event will also see the special presentation of the annual Shirley Lewis award to a secondary student in Maryborough.
First presented in 1989, the award aims to encourage and promote the musical talents of the next generation by providing a monetary amount to support their music endeavours.
An Afternoon of Music is set for this Sunday, December 1 from 2 pm at St Andrew’s Uniting Church on the corner of Neill and Palmerston streets.
Entry is $5 with money going towards the Uniting Church, after-noon tea will be served following the musical proceedings.
