It was only a strong final quarter by Navarre that staved off the Maldon challenge on Saturday, after a hard physical battle that saw the Grasshoppers eventually run out winners by 31 points.
It was no easy victory by any means as the Bombers led at quarter time, were just six points down at half time and just four points in arrears at three quarter time.
The visiting team gave their all, but the final quarter saw the Grasshoppers lift their game to keep their chances of finishing in the top four alive.
Recruit Billy Hawkes led the way for the Grasshoppers in only his second game for the season, and Billy Driscoll also led the way with three goals, while co-coach Jack Jess played a strong defensive game to restrict the Bombers’ attacking play.
Navarre named their best players as Hawkes, Driscoll, Josh Fowkes, Brady Tillig, Jess, and Sam Kaye.
Maldon named Seb Greene, Joshua Pascoe, Cody Gunn, who kicked four goals, Matthew Gray, Rhys Ford, who added three goals, and Jordon Collins in their best players.
