A surprise new potential premiership candidate has emerged in division one, while just five points separate the top three in division two of the Saturday pennant.

DIVISION ONE

Avoca Red made a big move on the weekend, moving up to second position on the ladder courtesy of a 60-55 win over Talbot Gold.

Chris Cocking took care of Peter McLaughlan 16-12, before Graeme Orr defeated Peter Fletcher 23-18. While Paul Radstock clawed back two points for Talbot Gold, it wasn’t enough, despite defeating Noel Parratt 25-21.

It means an unexpected first vs second matchup this weekend against Dunolly Blue, who are now the only undefeated team left in division one thanks to a 71-47 win over Newstead Blue.

David Cobden was able to get two points on the board for Newstead Blue after defeating Peter Waters 22-20, but they weren’t able to go on with it, with Gregory Dobbin inflicting Bill Burnett’s first loss of the season, 22-12, and Tony Galofaro finished off the job for the ladder-leaders with a 29-13 win over Brian Daly.

Highland Tartan have closed to within three points of Talbot Gold, but they lost two of the rinks against Maryborough Golf Blue as they missed their chance to leapfrog their way into third.

In the end, however, Greg Shay’s 35-7 win over Kevin Prime more than made up the difference, despite Golf Blue getting four points thanks to Gerry Carmody’s 24-21 win over Michael Fryar and Anthony Chambers’ 20-16 win over Garry Coburn, with Tartan finishing 72-51 winners.

Highland White are well positioned to strike if any of the top four stumble, courtesy of an 86-47 win over Dunolly Gold.

That came despite Keith Elliott taking two points for Dunolly Gold with a 29-16 win over Noel France. But Dennis Prosser’s 41-6 win over Jim Haigh, and Nathan Reeves’ 29-12 win over Frank Mifsud, allowed Highland White to move into fifth place on the ladder.

DIVISION TWO

Carisbrook made the big statement in the division two competition, putting together the biggest score this season in their 109-21 win over Newstead White.

Ron Baker got things started with a 34-10 win over Graeme Lipback, and they kept powering their way through the game, with Phillip Burt defeating Stuart Cochrane 34-7 and Syd Pearson taking a dominant 41-4 win over Adam Sewell.

Talbot Brown sit just one point behind after taking a 64-47 win over Maldon.

Barb Crossley maintained her undefeated run for the season, taking an 18-14 win over Peter Sedgwick, and Talbot Brown continued on the good form, with Ray Prentice defeating Annette Gillham 19-16 and William Donlon defeating Philip Best 27-17.

Highland Red are still in the mix, just four points behind Talbot Brown in the race for the double chance, defeating Dunolly Green 72-43.

Tilleke Wadeson defeated Fabio Delconte 15-13, and that was as close as Dunolly Green would get on any rink, with Tony Lacey defeating Aaron Britten 25-11 and Albert Spencer defeating Paul Chase 32-19.

Maryborough Golf Gold closed right up on Avoca Gold in fourth spot after taking a strong 72-38 victory.

Like the remaining games in division two, Golf Gold also took all 16 points on offer, with Ross Andrews defeating Loralee Field 34-11. It was closer on the remaining rinks, with Trevor Young defeating Allyson Hearnden 16-15 and John Scott defeating Ann Loosmore 22-12.

An intriguing sixth round awaits, with the aforementioned top of the table clash between Dunolly Blue and Avoca Red taking centre stage in division one.

Highland Tartan meet Highland White in an interesting affair, with Highland Tartan looking to take advantage of any slip up from Talbot Gold and Avoca Red above them to try move back into the top two, and Highland White looking to keep their finals chances alive.

Maryborough Golf Blue will look to bounce back when they host Newstead Blue, as well as keep their own finals hopes alive, while Talbot Gold face bottom team Dunolly Gold.

In division two, the highlight looks set to be third-placed Highland Red against fourth-placed Avoca Gold.

Maryborough Golf Gold can jump back into the top four if Avoca Gold lose, and will be favoured to beat Newstead White.

Ladder-leader Carisbrook travel to Maldon to keep their noses in front on top of the ladder, while Talbot Brown will be out to take over if Carisbrook slip up when they host Dunolly Green.
