The keys of the Bristol Hill Motor Inn have officially been handed over to its new owners, with local couple Gillian and Warren Tattersall excited by the “fascinating opportunity”.

The pair took over from Carolyn Butterfield last month, who ran the motel alongside her husband Bob for 13 years.

According to Warren, the pair became intrigued by the challenge following discussions with Carolyn and previous owners of the motel, including Brian and Judy Lennen who originally built the motel.

“We had an involvement with Carolyn and her financial advisors and knew she was keen to move on. We could see the potential to refresh and further develop the motel.

“The challenge to build the business is something we see as a fascinating opportunity.

“I recently turned 67 and I’m not interested in traditional retirement, I want to keep involved and active in business activities, I see myself involved with business in Maryborough for another 10 years.”

Gillian was formally an environmental health officer, working with various shires across Central Victoria, while Warren previously owned the family photographic business on High Street for 20 years.

Despite having no hotel ownership experience between them, the couple believes in the local community and the future of Maryborough.

“Maryborough is fundamentally a strong community and is growing in many areas. We see that there is a growing interest from people wanting to work in and visit the Maryborough area,” Warren said.

“It is critical for a local motel business to have local ownership who understand the community and its needs and who are able to be physically present when guests need support.

“We believe we are up to the task of taking on the challenges of growing the business to support the Maryborough area.”

As the new owners begin to settle into their new roles, many residents are hopeful that the change in ownership will lead to the re-opening of Peppa’s restaurant on site.

“Will we be running the restaurant ourselves, no, but we are keen to discuss the idea with the right person who wants to build a restaurant business in Maryborough and we would support such a person to build a vibrant restaurant within the motel,” Warren said.
