A new-look Newstead delivered the first marker of potential improvement for 2024 with a win over 2023 finalists Dunolly at home.
With plenty of new players all around the court, it might have taken a little bit of time to adjust, but Newstead hit the ground running with an 11-goal to 10 first quarter, with playing co-coach Bri Jury scoring six goals, and new goal circle partner Tayla Gale scoring five goals. At the other end, Zoe Aldridge scored four goals, while a player not shown on the system scored six goals.
Newstead kept creeping away in the second term, making the most of their opportunities as they scored 12 goals from 14 shots to lead 23-20 at the main break. Jury and Gale added six goals apiece, while Aldridge scored four of Dunolly’s 10.
The Eagles had the better of the play in the third quarter, but could only reduce the lead by one goal to trail 31-29 at the final change, with Aldridge scoring three times, while at the other end, Jury and Gale scored four times each.
Newstead settled in the final term, and made sure that round one would be their's, scoring 10 times to seven to ensure they would take victory. Gale scored seven times and Jury three, while Aldridge added four more goals for Dunolly.
Newstead will now look to make it two from two under lights next week against Harcourt, while Dunolly will need to bounce back next week against Navarre.
