It was perhaps one of the most bizarre scorelines of the season but it mattered little to Newstead, who kept alive their finals chances with a much-needed 47-point victory over Navarre at the Newstead Recreation Reserve.
So resolute was the Kangaroos’ defence throughout the day, they restricted the Hoppers to just one goal, that coming in the last quarter through Jayden Fowkes.
It was a very slow start to affairs on Saturday, with just one goal kicked in the opening term by the Kangaroos as they led by nine points at the opening change.
However, the Kangaroos had six shots at goal in the opening term, and straightened themselves out in the second quarter to skip away, kicking four goals to two behinds to extend their lead to 32 points by the main break.
Newstead continued to keep the foot on the accelerator, and weren’t willing to give Navarre a sniff at all, kicking a further two goals to three behinds to lead by 46-points at the last change, with Navarre registering seven behinds across the first three quarters.
The last quarter saw both teams pepper the goals, but the Kangaroos could only manage one goal from seven shots, while Navarre kicked one goal from six shots. Regardless, it was job done for the Kangaroos, who will now ironically be hoping Navarre get a win over the Maryborough Giants, while hoping to beat Campbells Creek themselves to jump into the top eight for the first time this season.
Adam Hunter put in a commanding performance for the Kangaroos to be named their best, while Hayden Hall, Angus Mayes, Jedd Pedretti, Alex Murphy and Heath Lawrence were also named in the best. Austin Peace was the only multiple goalkicker on the ground, kicking two goals.
For Navarre, Fowkes was their best, while Sam Walker, Nick Birthisel, Daniel Reading, Luke Hendy and Brady Tillig were also named in their best players.
