A close game was expected at Hedges Oval on Saturday, but it was not to be as Newstead handed the Giants a massive 122-point hiding.

It was the Giants that got the upper hand early with goals to Jacob Rollason, Kaylab Eggers and Blake Dawson and they led by 12 points just ten minutes into the game.

Playing-coach Damian Cupido was playing across half back for the Giants, but his presence did little to stop the onslaught of goals that was about to happen.

Newstead kicked five goals in succession through Adam Hunter (twice), James Mitchelhill, and Tyler James who also slotted two in a row as it was one way traffic in favour of the Steaders. Eggers slotted his second goal of the quarter just before the siren to give the Giants some hope as they trailed by a goal at quarter time.

Newstead’s Michael Runciman had three shots on goal inside the first five minutes of the second term kicking truly twice. Soon after he kicked his third goal of the game, while Newstead kicked four more goals including James’ third for the game.

Newstead was led out of the middle by Hayden Hall, who had a day out, and he linked up with Anthony Robins midway through the third term for the play of the day which resulted in a goal to Mitchelhill, who kicked three goals for the quarter.

Seven goals to one for the term had the Steaders up and about as they kicked out to an 82-point lead going into the final quarter.

A 10-goal final quarter to Newstead certainly helped to boost their percentage by 11 percent, which will be very helpful as they fight off Talbot for eighth position on the ladder.

Four final quarter goals to Runciman gave him seven goals for the game, while James snagged six goals and Hunter finished with five goals for the game.

It was a disappointing day for the Giants with only Declan Wagstaff and Eggers kicking more than one goal, with two goals apiece.

Newstead named Harrison McGuire, Robins, Hall, and Runciman as their better players as well as Alex Murphy and Mitchelhill.

The Giants named Archer Patterson, Luke Dunne, Cody Wright, Wagstaff, Ryan Howell and Jacob Plier as their best players.
