The outdoor pool season for the Dunolly and Talbot pool facilities has been extended until Monday, April 1, 2024.
The extended outdoor pool season will mean local residents continue to have access to aquatic facilities during the warmer weather, with the facilities to open on days where temperatures reach 25 degrees or above.
The extended season comes as the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre’s 25-metre pool is closed for upgrade from next Monday, March 4.
The pool tiles are almost 25 years old and are at the end of their life, with the upgrade to see the pool tiles in the 25-metre pool and surrounding pool concourse removed and replaced.
The project, funded through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, will be delivered by On Time Developments and is expected to be complete late May.
The extended season also follows the indefinite closure of Maryborough’s outdoor pool in 2022, with council currently seeking $8 million in funding to demolish and rebuild the facility.
Central Goldfields Shire mayor Liesbeth Long said she was pleased council could support a decision to extend the outdoor pool season.
“Given we are experiencing a late summer, it’s great our Talbot and Dunolly outdoor pools can be used and enjoyed for a few weeks longer this year,” she said.
“As with any capital works project, while there will be an inconvenience during the closure to those who use the indoor pool regularly, it is a case of no pain, no gain.
“The upgrade to the 25-metre pool will be a fantastic result, it will make this much-loved community asset more enjoyable and safer for our community to use and means it will be preserved for our community to enjoy for another 25 plus years.”
The gym and basketball facilities at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre will continue to remain open during the 25-metre pool upgrade — only the pool hall will close.
