Maryborough were unable to secure a second consecutive victory on Saturday, going down to a strong Gisborne team by 36 goals.

With a smattering of Victorian Netball League and Australian Netball League players featuring in Gisborne’s lineup, it was a tough assignment for Maryborough, and the Bulldogs proved to be too strong throughout the afternoon.

In particular, the defence of the Bulldogs was able to keep the Magpies at bay. They were only able to generate seven shots at goal in the opening quarter, converting two. Meantime, Gisborne scored 15 goals in the opening period to lead by 13 goals at the first change.

Gisborne were proving to be incredibly efficient going into their goal circle in the second quarter, scoring 16 goals from 19 shots, while Maryborough made the most of their opportunities to score six goals from nine shots in the second quarter. However, it was the Bulldogs with a 31-8 lead at the main break.

The third quarter was the Magpies’ most productive quarter of the afternoon, scoring nine goals as they were able to keep pace with the Bulldogs. However, they were unable to win the quarter, with Gisborne’s 13 goals allowing them to take a 44-17 lead into the final change.

The final quarter saw the Bulldogs ease to victory, scoring 15 goals to six to win 59-23 in the end.

Swung to goal keeper for this game, Keely Hare was named best for the Magpies, with Maggie Tranter also playing well. Abbey Nalder led the way scoring 14 goals, while Jordan MacIlwain added nine.

Next up for Maryborough is a clash against Eaglehawk — a team that the Magpies had great success against earlier in the season, winning their round five clash by 26 goals.
