It was a significant setback for the Magpies, who now sit a game and a half behind Sandhurst and Strathfieldsaye in the battle for third position.

However, it is also worth keeping in mind that the Magpies weren’t quite able to field a full lineup, with Jordan MacIlwain and Ella Patten missing on both ends of the court.

The Magpies got off to the better start on Saturday, but were made to work for their quarter time lead, scoring 12 goals to 10. Meg Kelly scored nine goals, while Katie Bilton, moving to goal attack in place of MacIlwain, scored three.

Golden Square started to take control in the second term, and hit the front by half time, scoring 12 goals to nine to lead by a solitary goal at the main break, 22-21, with Kelly scoring on eight occasions and Bilton once.

The Bulldogs started to shoot away in the third quarter, and extended their lead to five goals thanks to an 11-goal to seven term which saw them lead 33-28 at the final change. Kelly scored on six occasions, while Bilton scored once.

Golden Square ran away with the game in the last term as Maryborough made significant changes to try to win the game, but to no avail. Instead, the Bulldogs scored 13 goals to six. Kelly scored twice, while Maggie Tranter made a move to goal attack and scored on four occasions.

It was an unsuccessful day all-round for the Magpies, with B grade going down by 19 goals after conceding a fast start to the Bulldogs, while B reserve had a brave crack, sitting within six goals at three-quarter-time before Golden Square cleared away in the last term, scoring 16 goals to two to eventually win by 20 goals.

The 17 and under team were unable to match it with the ladder-leading Golden Square throughout the afternoon, and went down by 24 goals, which is a result which now sees the Magpies locked into third position.

The Magpies will now look to bounce back in their final home game of the season when they host Eaglehawk next week.
