Maryborough will be determined to avoid an eighth consecutive loss on Saturday when they host Kyneton at Barker Oval Princes Park.

It’s been a learning season for the young Magpies, their latest lesson coming against the 2022 grand finalists in Kangaroo Flat.

However, there are some good signs that the group are beginning to blossom and add confidence to their game.

Last week may have seen them lose by 51 goals, but the Magpies were able to negotiate the Kangaroo Flat midcourt frequently, and generated 34 goals out of it.

It was a testament to the work of the midcourt of Tori Chandler, Amanda Durbridge and Tali Chadwick, who have grown in stature as a trio as the season has gone on, to be able to give Keely Hare and Abbey Nalder the opportunities in the goal circle.

Defenders Alex Williams and Finley Wagstaff continue to toil hard against the best offensive duos in the league, and although they were powerless to stop the Kangaroos from scoring 85 goals, they would have been happy to concede just 18 in the last quarter, their lowest output of the afternoon.

Maryborough will be looking to turn around a 21-goal loss to Kyneton in round four.

Hare was at her goalscoring best, scoring 32 goals for the afternoon, while Chadwick enjoyed a stellar display.

Around the club, the under 17s will be looking to keep the pressure on third-placed Golden Square when they come up against the winless Tigers.

With Square suffering two losses in a row, the Magpies have closed the gap between themselves and the double chance to just half a game, with next week’s encounter proving crucial.

Elsewhere, the B grade and B reserve teams will have chances to break their drought for the season, coming against the Tigers, who lie eighth and ninth in both competitions respectively.
