Maryborough have a great chance to return to the winners list this weekend when they host winless Golden Square at Princes Park on Saturday.

The Magpies will be looking to arrest a five-game losing slide dating back to round five, and a third win for season 2022 could help them jump from ninth to seventh on the ladder depending on results around the Bendigo league.

However, they will not be taking it easy against a Square side that is desperately searching for its first win of the season, while it’s had two weeks to smart over their 86-goal defeat to Kangaroo Flat just prior to the league bye, which saw them concede a league-high 118 goals in that game.

Earlier in 2022, Square was the scene for Maryborough’s first win of the season, with the Magpies taking a 13-goal victory on that occasion in round three.

Pleasingly for the Magpies, despite going winless for five weeks, they’ve been able to blood some 17s players into the senior setup, rewarding a strong season from that division which has seen the Magpies sit in fourth position on the ladder. In recent weeks, Finley Wagstaff, Abbey Nalder, Tali Chadwick and Ella Bartlett are names that have been given opportunities to show they can mix it at senior A grade level.

Last time out for the Magpies, they were unable to match it against a Castlemaine side that was able to field one of their strongest lineups of the season, going down by 42 goals.

Maggie Tranter and Chrissy Hooper were two of their better players on that occasion, while they were able to trial a different goal circle combination in that game, with Keely Hare moving to goal attack to support Nalder’s inclusion in place of the unavailable Jordan MacIlwain.
