Former Newstead junior Jack Ginnivan has wrapped up season 2023 with his Collingwood Magpies in the biggest way possible — claiming the AFL Grand Final in a four-point clincher over Brisbane on Saturday.
Ginnivan only appeared in eight of the Pies’ 21 matches this year — two of which were as the tactical sub — but late last week he was given the nod to join the starting 22 in the grand final, and the young forward is now a premiership player.
The 20-year-old hit the headlines Saturday morning for his unique preparation ahead of the game, heading to the Moonee Valley racetrack with mates on Friday night, but it didn’t deter him during the big dance.
Speaking with AFL.com.au post-game, Ginnivan said to get the call up and then the win is “surreal”.
“I wasn’t down in the dumps, but I wasn’t playing that well and things weren’t going my way. It’s such a challenge to get back into this side, it’s a good side. But I believed in myself, so to come out the other end is an amazing feeling,” he said.
“From where I’ve come, it’s unreal. I’ve got this around my neck now. It’s surreal.”
After a mixed-bag season Ginnivan had some special moments in the grand final, but was ultimately fairly quiet with six kicks but no goals.
