Two newly minted clubs are earmarked to take on Maryborough in the first two rounds of the 2024 AFL Masters Vic Country season.
The South Coast Sharks will make their official club debut against the Pumas at Jan Juc in round one on April 20.
Maryborough will then meet new northern Victorian team Macorna at Princes Park in round two, most likely on May 5.
The AFL Masters Vic Country 2024 draft fixture was released last week, with the Pumas drawn to play Kerang twice (away and home), with home matches against Macorna, Moorabool Valley, and Gippsland, and trips to South Coast, Woodend and Echuca. There is also a carnival in Kiala (Shepparton) with shortened games which will be attended by clubs from across regional Victoria.
AFL Masters Vic Country president Brent Ali said Maryborough was a deliberate choice to welcome two new clubs to the competition.
“The masters’ footy motto is ‘football for fun’, and Maryborough is a very good example of a club which fully embraces that idea,” Ali said.
“It’s a great way to introduce a new club to our league that’s competitive but also played in great spirit. We’re all about creating an environment that’s an enjoyable experience for everyone who participates.”
Maryborough enjoyed its most successful AFL Masters season in its history last year.
Recruiting for new players has already begun, with Pumas president Travis Cain insisting anyone over the age of 35 with an interest in playing football was welcome to train and play with the club.
“We have players who recently finished up playing district football and are looking for something less physically demanding and others who have not played any club football at all,” he said.
“If you want to play, then we want to hear from you.
“The games are only part of what we’re about. It’s also about physical and mental health, mateship and looking after each other, and that includes the opposition too. That’s what we mean by playing in the right spirit.”
The Maryborough Pumas train each Wednesday at 6pm at Princes Park, with matches generally played fortnightly.
