Maryborough fell just one kick short of toppling arch nemesis Woodend-Hesket in their AFL Masters Vic Country football clash at Woodend.

The wasteful Pumas had four more scoring shots than the Hawks but only converted twice, defeated 2.10 (22) to the home team's 4.4 (28) last Saturday night.

Both teams struggled to score in the cool, slippery conditions despite numerous opportunities in what was a fast, open encounter.

Maryborough coach Terry Hillier said the low totals kicked by each side did not reflect the quality of play during the match.

“Both teams had their chances but both backlines played very well,” he said.

“A score line of two goals, 10 behinds is a frustrating return but there was a lot of pressure. It was a good even contest.”

Neither team kicked a major in the opening term as the ball zinged from one end to the other.

Woodend-Hesket gained the advantage in the second quarter with two unanswered goals as Maryborough managed just six behinds with the wind.

The visitors began to take control in the third term, helped in no small part by several Woodend-Hesket players loaned by the Hawks to even up player numbers.

A goal by full forward Trev Chapman put the Pumas within striking distance but they were unable to bridge the gap before time ran out.

Ross Egleton, Chris Gunn and Lauchlan Williams were among Maryborough's best players, with Jeremy Young, Sean Hellyar and Gav McGrath also solid contributors for the Pumas.

Maryborough will next host Moorabool Valley at Princes Park
